Assim começam os MC5 no primeiro álbum do grupo, o famoso "Kick Out the Jams", um LP ao vivo de 1969. Gravado na cidade de Detroit em 1968, num clima pré revolucionário, o álbum é a imagem clara do ambiente de contestação então existente na sociedade norte-americana. Os MC5 ficariam ligados (através do seu manager John Sinclair) à formação do White Panther Party, formação política anti-racista associada aos Black Panthers.
Se a revista Rolling Stones à época o considerou ridículo e pretensioso hoje coloca-o na lista dos 500 melhores discos de todos os tempos.
"Kick Out the Jams" um álbum pleno de energia, hoje considerado uma das melhores gravações Rock ao vivo, onde se destacavam, por exemplo, para além do tema título, a versão de "Motor City Is Burning", original de John Lee Hooker.
