Sandy Denny - Listen, Listen

1972 - Algumas escolhas de Miguel Esteves Cardoso

Se Miguel Esteves Cardoso achou que em 1972 "A cena folk no Reino Unido vai perdendo ímpeto e razão de ser...", também é verdade que de lá veio um disco maravilhoso, muitos furos acima da concorrência. Refiro-me ao álbum "Sandy", da Sandy Denny, claro, que continuava, sem conseguir ser reconhecida, a escrever as melhores canções Folk-Rock da sua geração. Miguel Esteves Cardoso deu-lhe quatro estrelas, pouco no meu entender.

"Sandy" continha oito originais, uma versão de "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" (Bob Dylan) e o magnífico tradicional "The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" com letra de Richard Fariña.

"Released in September 1972, it was the album which Island thought would bring a commercial breakthrough.", lê-se em "I've Always Ket A Unicorn" de Mick Houghton, o que infelizmente não aconteceu. Fred Cantrell, responsável de vendas da Island diria "We realised we had a total genius on our hands but the question was how to channel it. The "Sandy" album was her best shot; after that we began wondering: where are we going wrong?" e a própria Sandy Denny começou a manifestar problemas pelo inêxito obtido, isto apesar das críticas positivas que genericamente o álbum obteve. Citada no mesmo livro Linda Thompson disse: "After the Sandy album, it got her  down that her popularity didn't suddenly increase in leaps and bounds, and that was the start of her really fretting about the way her career was going."

Pessoalmente sempre considerei que, por muitas voltas a editora desse, os discos que Sandy Denny fazia nunca chegariam aos Top de vendas (tal como por exemplo Nick Drake) nem mesmo depois da sua morte em 1978. Infelizmente a sua música ficará para sempre ligada, como costumo dizer, a uma imensa minoria. Mesmo canções como "Listen, Listen", a faixa de "Sandy" que mais se aproximava de um possível êxito comercial.
